Moving Elderly Parents

Here are a few solutions to help your senior parent(s) overcome their moving struggles or concerns:

  1. Conquer the fear of the unknown by encouraging questions, Discuss their concerns on a regular basis. Encourage them to write down their new living arrangements - helps with the process. Consulting a Senior/Transition Moving Service can help with the downsizing, organizing, packing, unpacking and setting up their new home or Apt. (worth every penny!) Possibly have an Estate Sale after move in of new community.
  2. Provide pictures and room layouts so they can start imaging themselves living in their new environment. This helps with apprehension about moving.
  3. When moving into a senior community or apt, usually the Program Director will invite your loved one(s) to visit before their move and get to meet the current residents or new residents who will be moving into their new apt or home.
  4. Check out Senior Centers near their new community to explore their programs and meet new people - especially for those that are moving to a location where there are no activities provided - such as senior living apartments.

How To Downsize Your Home

Downsizing can be an emotional challenge for many seniors, but others actually look forward to tapering down their belongings and enjoying more free time by moving to a smaller place that requires less upkeep. Some seniors are very open to the idea of downsizing and may bring up the idea themselves. However, it may be necessary for family or friends to sit down with their loved one and discuss their options when the time arrives.

Timing these talks properly is essential, and the subject likely should not be brought up unless the senior is experiencing medical or caregiving issues that are hindering their quality of life. Approach the topic of downsizing and moving gently and compassionately. Use caution to ensure that the senior doesn’t feel like they’re involved in an intervention or being ‘ganged up on’ by friends and family. Make sure they know that it is authentic care and concern for their wellbeing that is being prioritized.

Moving Service for Adults 50+

For older people, a move is most likely to involve downsizing—and that means parting with lots of possessions. The move may be from a home with memories of raising a family, which triggers powerful emotions. And it frequently evokes a strong sense of loss.

When it comes time to move a loved one to a new residence a senior move manager can make it easier and less stressful. The quality of their service really stands out. Senior moving companies and senior move managers can help individuals and families save time and money by organizing and implementing a large move or residential downsize.

Hiring and Estate Sale Company

Should you hire an estate sales professional? Holding your own estate sale involves a tremendous amount of preparation... far more than many people realize. Organization and research will demand a great deal of your time and energy. With emotions running high and energy running low, trying to do it all alone.

Only an estate sale professional knows the market value of everyday items and antiques. Most liquidators will request that you not declutter before they come. They are more skilled in identifying items of value.
